Appropriately, THE CLASH LIVE: REVOLUTION ROCK tells the story of the band the most fitting way possible, through their live performances. From their early club performances to the blow out arena shows, this is the Clash at their best, all emotion and electricity. Directed by longtime Clash collaborator Don Letts, the set features 22 tracks, including rare and previously unreleased gems, including songs from the Manchester 1977 Elizabethan Suite show and U.S television appearances on Fridays and Tom Snyder. As bonus extras, two Bonds-era interviews with the band are included.

Mick Jones (né le 26 juillet 1955 à Brixton dans la banlieue de Londres) était membre du groupe de musique The Clash en tant que guitariste et chanteur, mais sans être le chanteur principal qui était Joe Strummer. Cependant il a chanté quelques chansons telles que Should I stay or should I go ou Train In vain. Il abandonne son groupe London SS en 1976 pour fonder avec Joe Strummer The Clash. Il écrivait généralement les mélodies pendant que Joe Strummer s'occupait des paroles. Après avoir été renvoyé des Clash en 1983 car ses gouts musicaux ne coincidait plus avec ceux du groupe, il forme son propre groupe, Big Audio Dynamite (également appelé Big Audio Dynamite II, Big Audio et B.A.D.).

Il est plus tard devenu producteur de disques. Ainsi il produit, entre autres, les deux albums de The Libertines et le premier album de Babyshambles

Les Clash sont certainement, avec The Police, le groupe le plus important issu de l'explosion punk – new wave qui a balayé l'Angleterre à la fin des années 70. Leur musique, qui voyait se mêler pour la première fois le rock, le reggae, le dub, le psychédélisme, le funk et le disco, a profondément influencé des nombreux groupes et artistes actuels, qu'ils soient anglais ou américains. The original Mescaleros line-up featured alongside Joe; Martin Slattery, Scott Shields, Pablo Cook, Antony Genn and Jed Lynch. After recording most of the first album Rock Art & the X-Ray Style, Jed left to play on a Marianne Faithfull tour. Smiley (aka Steve Barnard), ex Robbie Williams drummer, was brought in. He had been due to team up with The Eurythmics, only to let down by a last minute Lennox/Stewart change of plan. With the Marianne Faithfull tour never materialising, The Mescaleros were left with two drummers - Smiley got the nod and played drums on Forbidden City on the Rock Art album.

With the studio work completed, the band undertook a short British tour,with the first ever Mescaleros live performance not at Liverpool Lomax but, a week or so earlier at Sheffield Leadmill with the Llama Farmers supporting.

During the summer of '99 the band played a number of festivals including Amsterdam, Glastonbury & Fuji Rock. This was mixed with a short six date American tour and odd European dates. To promote the album and first single Yalla Yalla, a nine date British tour followed in October, with November seeing the start of an extensive North American tour. This punishing schedule finished in Paris in early December, the last of a three date mini European tour.

In January 2000, the band embarked on a three date Japanese tour, then flying onto a six date 'Big Day Out' festival listing in Australia and New Zealand. Two further dates were included at venues in Sydney and Richmond. With the band returning to England in early February, a three month gap saw only one live performance with Pablo Cook accompanying Joe at The Poetry Olympics in London, performing three numbers...Island Hopping, Junco Partner & London's Burning.

May 2000, saw a five date British and Irish tour finishing at Brixton Academy. On the last day of June the band (minus Antony Genn) played the Beach Bum festival in Jesolo, Italy. A V2000 Festivals listing took The Mescaleros to Chelmsford and Stafford. These were to be Antony Genn's last appearances with the band. A sad loss as Antony is an exceedingly talented musician/producer. The V2000 weekend kicked off with a warm-up bash in sauna-like conditions, at the Charlotte in Leicester.

A support roll on The Who tour came next, an unusual move as the band had several months earlier turned down a similar position on the Pearl Jam European Tour. A semi-secret gig at London's famous 100 Club was used as a warm up and enabled Q magazine to film the gig for later partial transmission in the glitzy Q Awards ceremony, where Joe received a special commendation for his lifetime achievements. The 100 Club was also the debut of Joe's long time friend Tymon Dogg as a permanent Mescalero. Scott Shields was a last minute casualty with nervous exhaustion and John Blackburn stood in very professionally. The date November 16th is a sad one in Mescaleros history. Wembley Arena, the final night of The Who tour, the final time Smiley drum rolled for The Mescaleros.

The early part of 2001 saw the band working on their second album Global a Go-Go. Pablo Cook was away with Moby but reunited with the band in Los Angeles, who were supporting The Brian Setzer Orchestra.

The summer release of first the single Johnny Appleseed and soon after, the album, was promoted by in-store performances with two date British and five date North American appearances. The revamped line up included Luke Bullen on drums and Simon Stafford on bass. In October 2001 a fifteen date North American tour began, including four nights sold out at the Troubador in Los Angeles. This was quickly followed by a five date Japanese tour. November saw a seven date British and Irish tour, preceeded by the Womad Festival in Gran Canaria. The month finished off with three dates in Europe - Paris and two shows in Greece.

Joe Strummer, le chanteur du groupe The Clash, est mort dimanche 22 décembre à l’âge de 50 ans. Très engagé politiquement, en particulier dans les mouvements antiracistes, il restera "la" voix de quelques-uns des plus célèbres albums de l’histoire du rock.

Selon le réalisateur et ami Don Letts, Joe Strummer est décédé d’une crise cardiaque. D’après sa maison de disques, le musicien "s’est éteint pacifiquement à son domicile" de Broomfield dans le Somerset (sud de l’Angleterre).

Né le 25 août 1952 à Ankara, John Mellor pour l’état-civil s’était d’abord illustré au milieu des années 70 avec une formation pub-rock aujourd’hui culte, The 101ers. En 1976, il rencontrera Mick Jones pour rejoindre les Clash au côté de Paul Simonon (basse) et Terry Chimes (puis Topper Headon) à la batterie.

Dans l’Angleterre conservatrice du début des années 80, les repères étaient plus « simples ». « Thatcher était une salope. Mais une salope honnête qui avait des convictions. Tony Blair est bien pire. Avec lui, tout est calculé, étudié par des conseillers en image. Il n’y a même plus de place pour le débat. Tu es pauvre ? Voilà pour toi. Tu es libéral ? On ne t’oublie pas. Dans son monde idéal, on chanterait des chansons chrétiennes à la guitare sèche en portant des habits propres. » confiait Strummer.

Une société au bord de la décrépitude attendait un geste extrême pour basculer. Les Sex Pistols vont incarner en pionniers cette vague anarchique de rébellion et de créativité. Strummer verra la lumière lors d’un de leurs concerts. "En cinq secondes, expliquait-il, j’ai compris que tout ce que je faisais musicalement appartenait au passé. La folie des Sex Pistols ouvrait des horizons bien plus excitants."

Le chanteur des Clash conservait à la fois l’amertume des combats perdus et l’enthousiasme de la rébellion. "Nous étions arrogants et nous pensions détenir la vérité avec la musique. A l’époque, nous étions des révolutionnaires, des marxistes, alors que des gens comme nous auraient été emprisonnés dans les pays communistes. Nous voulions changer le monde, mais nous n’avions pas d’autre alternative que le socialisme à proposer. Or l’expérience communiste a abouti à des états policiers, au goulag dans lesquels des individus comme nous auraient immanquablement fini. Nous étions jeunes, fougueux, mais pas grands penseurs." affirmait celui qui portait toujours des T-shirts à l’effigie de Mesrine ou des Brigades rouges.

Tout à son messianisme révolutionnaire, le groupe avait rogné sur ses royalties pour imposer à CBS de vendre le double album « London Calling », puis le triple « Sandinista » au prix d’un simple. Après la séparation du groupe, Strummer se rend au Nicaragua. « J’imaginais que les Sandinistes apprécieraient qu’un disque porte leur nom. Ils n’en avaient jamais entendu parler ! Et les radios ne déversaient que de la variété comme Bananarama. » Sa quête d’intégrité a dû encaisser les coups de boutoir. Durant la guerre du Golfe, on l’a contacté pour utiliser, sept ans après sa sortie, le tube planétaire des Clash, « Rock the Casbah », dans un jeu vidéo dont l’objet était de bombarder des villes arabes. Strummer, qui fustigeait dans ses chansons « la rébellion transformée en argent », a d’abord cru au canular et, bien entendu, a refusé.

Avec Joe Strummer, c’est un destin qui s’achève, et même le roman d’une génération qui s’accomplit : celui du petit punk, agité, à la voix rauque et éraillée, devenu l’icône de la révolte anti-Thatcher, du combat sandiniste, tout un état d’esprit. Joe Strummer, et le Clash, ont poussé le cri et incarné le style que nombre des 30-40 ans d’aujourd’hui auraient aimé un jour proférer ou s’autoriser, qu’ils se sont parfois d’ailleurs appropriés, ce que l’on pourrait nommer le London Calling.
